최욱경(1940-1985)의 작품세계는 단색화와 민중미술로 이어지는 1970~80년대 국내 화단의 흐름과는 거리를 두고 있다. 그녀는 국내에 추상표현주의의 영향이 사실상 사그라든 시점에 미국 본토에서 이를 본격적으로 학습했다는 점과 남성 중심의 추상화단에서 술과 담배를 즐기는 낭만적인 성격의 독신 여성이라는 이색적인 존재로서 주목받았다. 학습기를 지나 점차 자신만의 독자적 양식을 구축하던 때에 조지아 오키프의 영향을 받고 이를 자기화하였으며, 한국의 자연에서 추출한 형태와 강렬하고 아름다운 색채를 구사하는 고유의 능력으로 독자적인 색채 추상화의 양식을 완성한 것으로 평가된다.
Choi Wook Kyung’s art is far from the flow of the Korean art world, which led to Dansaekhwa and Minjung art in the 1970s and 1980s. At a time when the influence of Abstract Expressionism in Korea almost declined, she was noticed as a romantic single woman who enjoyed drinking and smoking in a male-dominated abstract art group. After the learning period, when she gradually built her own style, she was influenced by Georgia O'Keeffe and made it her own. It is evaluated that she has completed her own color abstraction style with her unique ability to use strong and beautiful colors and shapes extracted from the nature of Korea.
